Top 5: Sylvia Massy

SHURE SM57 MICROPHONE

If you only have one mic, this ought to be it. It is a sturdy, inexpensive dynamic, doesn’t need outside power like condenser mics, not delicate like a ribbon, and it captures recordings with ease. I use my 57s for top snare mic position, and paired with a Sennheiser 421 on guitar cabinets. I’ll use a 57 on an acoustic to get a woody tone. I did that on Prince’s ‘Walk Don’t Walk’ on the album Diamonds and Pearls. The SM57 is small enough to be non-obtrusive in videos and it’s cheap enough to sacrifice while recording under water or in a volcano. They are legendary for being indestructible, but I proved that to be wrong while shooting a piano with a shotgun with Tool on the ‘Undertow’ album. The SM57 was in the line of fire and did not survive.

RUPERT NEVE DESIGNS 5088 CONSOLE

This is a no fuss, rock-solid, great-sounding console – and it is a Neve. It sounds like my old 8038 with a little more versatility on the top end. I’ve gotten fantastic, punchy, beefy drum tones right here in my place using this console. I sold my 1972 Neve 8038 and honestly don’t miss it. The old thing sounded great but was always just limping along. And it was huge. The RND 5088 is a custom build just for this room. It’s nice to get great Neve sounds without the headaches. I tracked the new Monolord album ‘Neverending’ on the Rupert Neve Designs console.

DANISH AUDIO DENMARK AX64 DIGITAL INTERFACE

The DAD AX64 is the best multi-channel interface I know. The best you can get because it is so versatile. The DAD can be configured to grow with your system using a series of slide-in cards. I use analogue input cards and output cards as well as AES/EBU, ADAT, Dante and Thunderbolt for digital routing into my main recording computer which is a Macintosh M4 running Pro Tools as my DAW.

HEAR TECHNOLOGIES HEAR BACK PRO HEADPHONE SYSTEM

My most favourite new studio device is the Hear Back headphone system with the digital overlay. Clients love it because the digital displays change with the needs of the session. I add channels with ease in the Pro Connect software and names appear instantly on the headphone boxes. I can even send private messages digitally to individual boxes during a session. It is genius. I have to be careful with levels on the way into it (it doesn’t like hot inputs), but beyond that, it is a powerful studio tool that keeps the sessions going smoothly.

JAYMAR TOY PIANO

Odd little toy pianos follow me from studio to studio. I use them on every session, for pitch reference in tom tuning, for writing parts, for reference pitch in vocal tuning and writing harmonies. It is a very useful studio tool and occasionally it gets featured on a record when we need a creepy axe murderer sound.
