That old chestnut of turning up your monitors as your ears get fatigued can be a real problem for mix engineers. Sometimes you need to tuck that monitor controller out of the way to stop yourself ‘pumping up the volume’. TC Electronic has built the ultimate monitoring solution, Clarity X, complete with a measurement mic to keep a constant eye on that creeping dB figure. The system is made of four parts: the hawkish measurement mic, a desktop ‘big knob’, a rack unit and a suite of mastering tools. The suite includes a loudness-based Stereo Deviation meter to check how you surround mic will translate to stereo; a new Centre Ratio meter to depict the balance between key material in your centre channel (read dialogue) and your surrounds; the new LM8 Loudness meter with support for 7.1; true peak; SPL and a dose meter. If you couldn’t tell already, Clarity X is suited to broadcast setups. With both analogue and digital AES inputs on the rear of the rack unit, it’s got enough to handle two separate 7.1 monitoring systems at once. It also offers full base management and separate solo/mute functionality for each speaker in the system. Now there’s no reason for messing up that vocal level.
