Cans Made From Cans

When Sennheiser first released the HD25 headphones the company probably didn’t consider the design would stick around long enough to coincidentally get a spit and polish re-release to mark the 25th anniversary of Sennheiser making cans – but that’s what’s happened. Talking of cans – the recycled kind – the anniversary HD25 edition is called the HD25 Aluminium with the earcups sporting a distinctive, aluminium finish having been carved out of solid lumps of the stuff. Apart from minimising resonance no other improvements have been made, but having lasted as a product 25 years the HD25 are a solid argument for “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. Some historical trivia – from 1989 to 2004 British Airways used the HD 25 BA for passengers on board their Concorde flights due in part to their high performance, plus the ability to block engine and wind noise with their closed design (the Concorde was a noisy beast). Passengers liked them so much, they occasionally took the headphones with them. See? You’re not the first to nick the in-flight headphones as a spare set for your iPod. We’ll see these on the shelves in a few weeks with a RRP $549.95 price tag.
