Is there an audio interface with a longer, more credentialed history than MOTU’s 828? Probably not. The next-gen, single rackspace 828 is now upon us, and this time it’s packing Thunderbolt. The new 828x provides all of the same features as the latest 828mk3 Hybrid interface, including hi-speed USB 2.0 connectivity, but replaces Firewire with Thunderbolt. Once hooked into a Thunderbolt ecosystem, the 828x promises to stream 58 simultaneous channels of audio (28 inputs and 30 outputs) with plenty of bus bandwidth to spare for smooth, glitch-free operation. Up to six devices can be connected to a Thunderbolt daisy-chain, with the 828x at the end of the chain.
