New Approach to Dynamics

Australian software developer FlickSwitch Audio has announced Liminal, a dynamic threshold processor designed to reshape how producers and sound designers interact with transients, amplitude, and movement.

Built around a three-lane amplitude-based processing engine, Liminal allows users to split an incoming signal by intensity and route each layer through independent effects. Instead of applying processing across an entire sound, Liminal responds to the performance itself, allowing quieter details, mid-level body, and louder transient moments to be shaped separately.

The result is a new approach to dynamics, tone, and creative movement: one that keeps the feel of the original performance intact while giving producers precise control over what comes forward, what gets softened, and what transforms entirely.

At the centre of Liminal is a visual three-lane system that separates audio according to amplitude and transient strength. Each lane can be routed to its own processing path, allowing users to enhance attack, add movement to subtle details, create contrast between dynamic layers, or build complex evolving textures from a single source.

Liminal also includes input detection EQ per lane, giving users control over what part of the frequency spectrum triggers each dynamic layer. Low-pass and high-pass detection modes allow the processor to react differently to bass weight, midrange body, or high-frequency transient information.

Designed for both practical production moves and experimental sound design, Liminal can be used to add excitement to drums, separate the impact and sustain of guitars, reshape synths, bring movement to vocals, or create dynamic FX responses that follow the natural contour of a performance.
