Milan certification for MOTU audio interfaces

MOTU recently completed Milan Certification for its 16A, 848, and 10pre audio interfaces, which are equipped with two Gigabit AVB Networking Ethernet ports that enable them to share, route, and distribute hundreds of channels of audio with other devices on a Milan AVB network.

“Milan Certification means that studio engineers, systems integrators, and other audio professionals can now seamlessly incorporate MOTU audio interfaces into networks with other Milan Certified devices from leading pro audio brands such as Meyer Sound, L Acoustics, d&b Audiotechnik, and DiGiCo, to name just a few,” said Jim Cooper, MOTU Director of Marketing. “Thanks to the Avnu Alliance, Milan Certified Products greatly enhance consistency and inter-operability among pro audio devices that support the open Milan Standard.”

“We are delighted to welcome MOTU as the newest Milan Associate Member of the Avnu Alliance!” said Dave Cavalcanti, President & Chairman of the Avnu Alliance. “As an industry-led organization driving the adoption of TSN and Milan in the market, we are always excited when new members such as MOTU achieve the certification milestone, and we’re looking forward to collaborating further on advancing cutting-edge solutions in the pro audio and AV industries.”

The 16A, 848 and 10pre interfaces have been Certified by Avnu as a bridged endstation because they feature a built-in 1 Gigabit Milan AVB switch with two external network ports on the rear panel. This configuration allows users to daisy-chain multiple units and build networks without the need for stand-alone switches.

Milan support is available to all existing 16A, 848 and 10pre owners through a free, easy-to-install firmware update downloaded from motu.com. Other recent firmware, driver, and CueMix Pro app enhancements include:

  • ARM processor support for Windows— Includes firmware, drivers, and the CueMix Pro controller app.
  • 24-channel WDM streams on Windows— Can be enabled independently for input and output streams.
  • Delay compensation— CueMix Pro’s comprehensive, flexible routing matrix now provides 64 multi-purpose delay lines (channels) with up to 2 ms of delay per channel.
  • One-click network synchronization— Provides unified synchronization across all MOTU devices on a network, for both current generation and legacy models.
  • Support for static IP addresses— MOTU device IP addresses are assigned automatically by the network, but if a user needs to manually assign a static IPv4 address, they can do so in the front panel display.
  • Deterministic IP address connection— The CueMix Pro app can search for devices with specific IP addresses on VPNs or networks that don’t support multicast discovery.
  • Clock freewheeling— MOTU devices freewheel during network clock interruptions to maintain continuous audio streaming until lock is re-established.
  • Mac host volume control— Users can optionally control the main out volume of their MOTU interface from their Mac keyboard.
  • Front panel lockout— Users can temporarily disable all front panel controls to prevent unwanted tampering of device settings.
  • DAC filter options— In critical listening environments, users can fine-tune DAC performance with Minimum Phase (Default), Linear Phase Fast, and Linear Phase Slow filter options.

About Milan

Developed by professional audio manufacturers within the Avnu Alliance, Milan is a standardized profile of AVB/TSN Ethernet networking for professional audio that ensures consistent operation across manufacturers. Milan standardizes AVB implementations by removing ambiguity around optional features and manufacturer-specific choices. For example, Milan defines a base audio format, diagnostic counters, and mandatory support for dynamic stream channel mapping, ensuring that Milan-certified devices handle audio streams predictably and respond appropriately to Milan controller apps.
