Arturia has brought back the sound of Tom Oberheim’s Matrix-12 analogue polysynth as authentic soft synth sensation, albeit one on steroids.

Matrix-12 V emulates all the original parameters of the Modulation Matrix, which was first launched in 1985 and was quite the revolution in its time. Largely due to its flexible routing that rivaled the monster modular systems preceding it, burying its ‘patch chords’ behind a futuristic-looking frontage, with multiple menu pages and few hands-on controls.

Adopted by 80s synth pioneers such as Yazoo’s Vince Clarke and German electro-music group Tangerine Dream, the M-12  originally had 15 filter types, copious modulation possibilities combined with 12 analogue voices each with dual oscillators.

Arturia’s emulation includes all the original features, with new parametric controls, controllable via MIDI inputs for DAWs or keyboard controllers. Also added is a drop-down MOD page to show every modulation amount, source, and destination, up to 40 modulation sources, over 500 programmed presets, and 6 studio-grade effects available in each of the two drop-down FX slots provided.

“Now that I write most of my music on the road, having access to great soft synths is key to what I do. With the Matrix-12 V, Arturia has faithfully recreated one of my favourite classic machines — excellent sounds and great functionality!” – DJ Sasha, 2014.
