THE TING TINGS - KATIE AND JULES_rs

On a remote hillside in southern Spain stands a recording studio that’s been purposefully designed around a new AMS Neve Genesys Black G32 console. Here, The Ting Tings are nearing completion of their fourth studio album.

The duo, Katie White and Jules De Martino, believe firmly that building their own studio every time is an important part of the creative process. They said: “We’ve got better at it over the years and our latest attempt is the most powerful and brilliant yet. We’ve even managed to pull in our grand piano. We promised ourselves never to make any two albums sound the same throughout the life of The Ting Tings. With amazing new equipment and surroundings we are changing things again.”

“We’re out in the sticks in the hills looking at mountains and orange and lemon groves in a cube modern designed gaff with a huge basement which is now our studio. Our long-time engineer and crew buddy Snowy rewired, restructured and designed the new set-up around the Genesys console. This is an absolute first to have a desk of any significance in the studio and it’s changing everything.”

Jules said the band had always dreamed about recording on a ‘warm’ AMS Neve desk and, so far, the Genesys Black hasn’t failed to impress. He added: “It is the perfect balance of advanced engineering, ‘old-skool’ basics, analogue/digital values and depth in use options and sound results. It’s like being back in the real game but without cutting off your nose to spite your face. We spent six months chatting to AMS Neve and researching our options. Our only regret is not jumping on it earlier.”

The duo say the new console has given them more time in the studio because there’s less fumbling around. They have some favourite features, starting with the 1073 mic preamp.

Jules explained: “We have eight channels of 88R and eight 1084 Classic, and it’s a treat both in sound and the way you get at it. Fingers on faders, fingers on assignment buttons, recalling sessions and lining up the desk/daw pre sessions.”

Katie added: “We believe that this addition to our studio has definitely brought the band closer in terms of being in a studio space together for longer hours. More of us can be in the front line affecting the outcome.”

The new Ting Tings album is scheduled for release in January 2017.
