“The mini-Moog was conceived originally as a session musician’s axe, something a guy could carry to the studio, do a gig and walk out.” – Robert Moog.

Since the mini-Moog, portability has been a main issue within the music technology development. For the last 45 years, producers have been craving for light yet powerful enough devices to bring their studio resources onstage.

The rise of the laptop as a music production station and performance instrument was a crucial turning point in portability, but laptops were not originally designed to be music instruments. Let’s face it: you do not play music with a typewriter’s keyboard, do you?

Although necessary, hardware controllers posed a hindrance for the total portability that laptops added to music’s live performance. They didn’t change the performer’s experience onstage completely, as musicians were still dependant on the old keys, knobs and faders devices to interact with software.

We all love keys, knobs and faders, of course, but things should be pushed forward a little bit more — especially now that we have the technology to do it, and mobile technology is a new turning point for music interaction.

Which is where Conductr enters the picture, the makers say the app isn’t about having everything in Ableton Live on your iPad, but about offering a user experience that makes sense on an iPad.

Conductr CEO Julià Carboneras said the makers don’t wish to merely “replicate hardware” on a touchscreen, but rather give “musicians the kind of resources that they can’t get from a hardware controller. From an ergonomic interface that adapts to any momentary need —in other words: you only see what you need at any given time— to a gestural mode that allows the user to play without watching the iPad and a modular basis that will permit the app to grow through the addition of complementary modules.”

Conductr was launched in September 2013 and in the last nine months, has been adopted from both professional and amateur musicians, including certified trainers and institutions like Point Blank and the Berklee College of Music.

This motivated the makers to release a free version for the masses. From today, you can download a basic version of Conductr for free which will allow you to control 4 tracks and 11 scenes on any Ableton Live set. You can also create 2 user modules, each one can integrate up to 8 parameters from any device on any track of your set. The update also includes a Sends Mode in the Mixer Module, a Mute Hiding button and the possibility to save your projects’ complete set-up.

There are in-app purchases for different premium modules and packs to get unlimited features, with new modules launched in upcoming weeks.
