A free sample bank featuring an iconic orchestra.

Spitfire Audio was founded in 2007 by two award-winning composers: Christian Henson and Paul Thomson. Born out of their shared dissatisfaction for string sample libraries, they pooled their resources and decided to record their own string samples at the legendary AIR Studios in London. Initially, they invited a limited number of friends and associates to own copies of their samples, but whispers of this private sample club soon started to echo across the Atlantic Ocean throughout the composer community. Within a year, some of the most renowned composers in film and television signed up, so Paul and Christian decided to take their samples public.

Designed to make orchestral scoring accessible to music creators of every level, 33 instruments and 47 techniques have been brought to life inside Spitfire’s free, easy-to-use plugin. BBC Symphony Orchestra Discover is an inspiring gateway into orchestral composition, and features the same professional and detailed recording process as both the Core and Professional editions — and in an incredibly lightweight and accessible package of only 200MB.

Each edition is fully interchangeable through Spitfire’s innovative mode switching technology, making it easier than ever to share and collaborate with fellow composers, regardless of which edition they own. This makes Discover an extremely useful tool for composers of all levels writing on the go, or with the most basic technical setup, who can then go on to complete their compositions in Core or Professional. It’s also easy to start using BBCSO Discover with your DAW of choice thanks to a wide range of templates provided by our composing community.
