Dating back to 1999 and currently developed by Muse Group, Audacity is a simple, free, open source, cross-platform, multi-track audio editor and recorder. It can handle 16-, 24-, and 32-bit audio, and supports VST, AU, Vamp, LV2, Nyquist, and LADSPA format plugins. For quick conversions and edits that don’t require a DAW to load and run the plugin validations, this can be a handy little option to have in the arsenal. It can also be subbed in as a destructive editor in non-destructive DAW environments.

Features:

  • Record live audio
  • Record computer playback on any Windows Vista or later machine
  • Convert tapes and records into digital recordings or CDs
  • Edit WAV, AIFF, FLAC, MP2, MP3, Ogg Vorbis sound files
  • AC3, M4A/M4R (AAC), WMA, Opus and other formats supported using optional libraries
  • Cut, copy, splice or mix sounds together
  • Numerous effects including change the speed, pitch or tempo of a recording
  • Write your own plug-in effects with Nyquist
